Health -Parasite Prevention

Complete eradication of parasites is not possible or feasible. Different management tools can be incorporated to overcome this problem. Start with your own farm. If an area is infested, lime it and leave it barren for at least 6 months. If a pasture is infested, turning the soil, liming the area, and keeping the animals off of the area for about 6 months will eliminate the problem. For additional security, soil samples from infected areas could be tested for presence of the parasites by an experienced technician for a minimal charge. Make sure to isolate and quarantine the animals when buying goats and bringing them to your herd. De-worm all goats with a recommended anthelmintic and remove animals to another paddock after 24-48 hours. By doing this, the majority of infected feces will be left behind.

Also make sure to de-worm in 2-3 weeks (larva will be adult worm in 2-3 weeks) to kill any remaining adult worms. In severe cases, infected pastures should be free of goats for 6 to 12 months to be considered clean. However, turning the pasture over and liming it may expose eggs and larvae and reduce the wait time. Cattle or horses can graze the pastures; however, sheep cannot (they share similar parasites with goats). Again, using copper sulfate at 1 teaspoon per animal per week is recommended to keep animals healthy, free of parasites and boost their immune system.
