Health -External Parasites

Lice are the most prevalent external parasites of goats. They are very contagious and cause extreme stress on animals. It is recommended to dust goats over the loin and neck area with CoRal 1% dust or other available compounds.

Flies are pests that can be a problem especially in confinement situations. Fly prevention should be initiated early in the season. Integrated pest management using parasitic wasps may be used to biologically control barn flies by feeding on them. Other systems such as baited traps, light traps or stick tapes may be used.

The most important way to keep down the fly population is to have a good housekeeping system which includes using a regular sanitation schedule, changing the bedding frequently, and preventing water accumulation through proper drainage. All of these methods will reduce the fly population. Manure accumulation and spilled feeds will also attract flies.
