Caseous lymphadenitis (CL) is caused by a bacterium that invades the lymph system. This disease is highly contagious, and the bacterium can stay in soil for years plus it can resist extreme environmental conditions. If you are a new goat owner and have never had goats on the farm, it is advisable to vaccinate your goats against this disease. However, vaccination has not proven to be reliable. Animals can be tested for positive reactors, but testing may not be economically feasible. Ask your veterinarian for the source of the vaccine or testing.
