A well cared for yearling buck with adequate size and development may be permitted to do limited breeding. Sexual maturity is obtained from nine to 18 months depending on breed and management conditions. However, the buck will still grow through two years of age. Overwork or premature breeding of a large number of does can result in a stunted, strained herd sire. From two to five years, the mature buck can be released with a herd of does without fear of harmful effects.
