Condition Score

Bucks should be well maintained in good condition year-round. Rubbing hands over their spine, ribs and flank can quickly assess their body condition or amount of flesh they are carrying. If these bones feel prominent and sharp, then their condition is low. If the bones feel smooth or are undetected, then their condition is good. A scale of 1 to 9 may be used to assign a condition score. A score of 1 is thin and emaciated, while a score of 9 is excessive fat. For breeding purposes, try to keep the buck in a condition score of 5 to 7, with a smooth layer of muscle covering the bones.
