Pregnant Doe Management

Exercise is very important for improving muscle tone, blood circulation and physical condition of the doe. Keep the feed and water trough at a distance to encourage walking and exercise, which may partly reduce edema.

Check the pregnant does daily for general health, conditioning, udder health and signs of parturition. During the last two to three weeks of gestation, if the doe’s udder fills too tightly with milk, milk her out, saving the colostrum. This will prevent udder damage.

The last part of pregnancy is a good time to deworm the animals; this is also a good time to treat them for external parasites such as lice. Pregnancy is hard on body muscles, bones and feet. You must keep up with hoof trimming; check for hoof rot and treat it before it is too late. Keep the long hair trimmed around the hindquarters and in front of the udder. This hair collects dirt and will interfere with nursing at the proper time of parturition (giving birth).
