Breeding Management

A well-planned breeding program is highly recommended for any profitable production farm that may be expanding to a commercial operation of greater than 50 to 100 head of breeding age does. Most meat-type goats breed year-round, and many does can breed back while they are nursing. Therefore, it is not recommended to allow the bucks to run with the does throughout the year. Many factors should be considered including feed resources, labor and market availability. Also continuous breeding may subject under-developed replacement doe kids to the buck and may have a negative influence on overall profitability.

Some goat breeds are seasonal breeders. These breeds are normally most fertile from August through December. Closer to the equator, these same breeds will exhibit estrus throughout the year.
